Custom Optical Lenses Measurement

Custom Optical Lenses

The production of optical lenses starts from material selection, after fine processing and inspection, finally packaging and mailed to customers. Custom optical lenses are commonly used in telescopes, digital cameras, precision optical instruments and other applications. The optical design of each application is different. The required parameters of the optical lens are also different. The optical parameters to be detected include Radius of curvature, PV, focal length and other parameters.

► Radius of curvature

Optical instruments for measuring the radius of curvature of a spherical lens include spherometers, autocollimating telescopes and autocollimating microscopes. Self-collimating telescopes and self-collimating microscopes are non-contact measurement, the spherical surface needs to be polished. The adjustment of the instrument is more complicated. This method of the spherical diameter meter is simple. The measured optical components do not need to be polished, which is suitable for needs of production.

PV(Peak to Valley)

The surface shape of ptical lenses affects imaging quality. The methods of detecting PV can be divided into template method and interferometer method. In the optical workshop, the optical sample measurement  is usually used. The principle is equal thickness interferometry. This type of contact measurement is easy to operate, but it is not suitable for measuring templates and other high-precision optics. In order to improve the measurement accuracy, the interferometer measurement method is widely used. Its principle is similar to that of the template method, except a non-contact method.

The commonly used interferometer is laser interferometers, eg. ZYGO interferometer, which consists of a laser, an internal optical system, optical lenses, a CCD camera and a computer. The laser beam is expanded by the telescopic system. After collimating the beam, it passes through the optical lens to be measured. The reference surface and the measured surface reflect part of the beam to the laser interferometer to form an interference pattern, which is recorded by a CCD camera and analyzed by a computer to obtain the surface shape of the optical lens.

Focal length

The additional lens method is mainly used to measure the focal length of negative lenses. The negative lens to be tested and a positive lens with a longer focal length form a Galileo telescopic system, and then the apparent magnification of this telescopic system is measured.

The most commonly used method for measuring the focal length of a lens is the magnification method, which has simple equipment, large measurement rangeam and high measurement accuracy. It is operated easily. This method is mainly used for the focal length and vertex focal length of telescopic objective lenses, photographic objective lenses and eyepieces. It is also used to test the focal length and vertex focal length of positive and negative lenses in production. The magnification method measures the focal length of a lens on an optical bench or a focal length meter. The optical bench consists of a collimator, a lens holder, a measuring microscope and a guide rail.
